Sharing Audio From Videos During a Videoconference

If you’re finding yourself teaching and learning in videoconferences these days (and with the COVID-19 pandemic closing schools worldwide and moving many schools online, like ours , that’s most of us in education) it can be very helpful to be able to play live video WITH NATIVE / line feed audio from YouTube or other sites in a videoconference. Whether you’re videoconferencing with Google Hangouts Meet (as we are mostly) , Zoom, GoToMeeting, or another solution, sharing your microphone audio AND computer audio from a web browser like Google Chrome requires a bit of geeky tinkering. These audio channels have to be MIXED together / combined on your computer before being ‘sent out’ as a single source into a videoconference. " Sharing Audio From Videos During a Videoconference " ( CC BY 2.0 ) by  Wesley Fryer Fortunately, if you’re a MacOS computer user, there is an excellent solution and workflow for this. It will set you back about $100, but it works great. In this post, I’

California: State Superintendent Thurmond Says Schools Probably Will Not Open Again This School Year

State Superintendent Tony Thurmond announced that public schools are unlikely to reopen this calendar year due to the coronavirus. California public school campuses are unlikely to reopen for the remainder of the academic school year in response to the coronavirus pandemic, state Supt. of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond said Tuesday in a letter to school district officials. “Due to the current safety concerns and needs for ongoing social distancing it currently appears that our students will not be able to return to school campuses before the end of the school year,” Thurmond wrote. “This is in no way to suggest that school is over for the year, but rather we should put all efforts into strengthening our delivery of education through distance learning.” Earlier, Thurmond had resisted suggestions that there was no hope for returning to campus. His letter Tuesday represented a shift of direction. His statement also echoed remarks from Gov. Gavin Newsom at a midday Tuesday news confe

Having A Support System Important Now More Than Ever

We were all caught off guard by the Coronavirus. When I heard we weren’t heading back to school for the rest of the year, I began to panic. Like many of you, I began asking myself: “What am I going to do? How am I going to teach students from home? What about assessments? How is this all going to work?” After thinking and asking myself these questions, I realized something: I know TONS of people that can help! Why would I try to do this alone? I have a great support system! Where? Twitter. Those of you who don’t use social media as a professional resource might be surprised. Let me explain. The Twitter Physical Education (and education in general) professional learning network is like my second family. I remember first joining because I was having a tough time with assessments. Now, with the help of my support system, it has become a strength. I quickly realized that much of the problems I was having in class, other teachers had as well. Twitter is a gathering place for us to learn fr

How a Preschool for At-Risk Children Is Prioritizing Mental Health During COVID-19 Closures

As the nation’s educators navigate the sudden school closures that the COVID-19 outbreak has brought upon them, many debates, decisions and news stories are focused on how students will continue to learn and receive instruction outside their brick-and-mortar school buildings. And while academics are certainly important, for many kids school is so much more than a place for learning. It can be a reliable source of two meals a day, a refuge from an unstable home environment, or a way to access counseling and other mental health services. So how are the children who depend on schools for those additional services getting by, now that seemingly everything in the country has ground to a halt? Last fall, this EdSurge reporter spent a few days in southwest Ohio, visiting a specialized preschool program for kids who have experienced severe trauma. These are kids who depend on wraparound services such as meals, transportation and mental health services. The program is called the therapeuti

Dos and don’ts for using informational texts with young learners

With the Common Core Standards came an increased focus on reading informational texts, starting with kindergarten. But integrating informational texts isn’t as simple as having students read a couple of biographies every marking period. In the edWebinar, “ Strategies to Engage Young Learners with Informational Texts ,” Nell Duke, Professor of Literacy, Language, and Culture at the University of Michigan School of Education, offered her advice for understanding and incorporating informational texts in the classroom. Related content: How we turned around our reading program First, teachers should get familiar with informational texts–whose primary purpose is to convey information–to understand how they can support classroom lessons. While nonfiction books are what most educators think of, informational texts can include audio, images, video, etc. It’s the purpose of the text that matters more than the medium used. from eSchool News https://ift.tt/2UT7wzn via IFTTT
