Think back, ALL the way back, to your first year of teaching. What do you remember? Were you as effective as you hoped to be? I often joke that I want to go back to apologize to those students, as it was a rough first year. There are many things I wish I knew as a first-year teacher. The sweep of the coronavirus across the U.S. has produced an information paradox. News reports—and rumors—about the pandemic are inescapable. Yet without a coordinated national response to the crisis, reliable data that could help inform policy is scarce. School leaders trying to make decisions about whether and how to reopen physical classrooms this fall are feeling the absence of useful statistics acutely. I was doing a virtual walkthrough in a Kindergarten teacher’s Zoom classroom. The lesson was on high frequency words. The teacher led the class through her lesson with an energy unique to Kindergarten teachers.  She had them working. They began to “karate chop” the words. I watched a whole class of adorably eager faces shout out each letter of a word as their arms chopped across their bodies.  The class was perfectly engaged in the learning.  After this incredible display of teaching acumen, the teacher began calling on students to read the words they just learned. After seeing the level of enthusiasm the class displayed during the lesson I was certain each would read the words effortlessly. She called on the first student and held up a flashcard. This study aimed to explore learners’ discourse patterns and outcomes while using a visible-annotation tool as a collaborative representation tool. The tool used in this study introduced two types of sharing activities before the problem-solving phase to support sequential knowledge construction. Forty participants were randomly assigned to one of three groups according to two variables: type of sharing activities (meaning sharing activity (M) and opinion sharing activity (O)), and type of representation function to guide sharing activities (word-based function (W) and sentence-based function (S)). All three groups performed sharing activities during the same period. After completing these, the participants carried out a lesson-planning task in pairs during the problem-solving phase. All annotations across three learning phases were categorised to investigate discourse patterns. With the increased focus on the use of digital platforms to facilitate teaching and learning comes the challenge of creating connections between international students and their new classmates. The use of social media in higher education may be one avenue that can enable not only learning but also social connections between students to improve the international study experience and sense of community. This article reports on the findings of a small survey study at an Australian university, which demonstrate that the majority of international students surveyed had greater prior experience with social network sites for personal and educational use rather than wikis, blogs, and discussion forums, which are often used in institutional settings. Furthermore, the results suggest that the educational use of social network sites led many participants to add new classmates as profile friends. Last week it became state-wide news when a school board member in Cabarrus County used a slur on a video conference for all to hear. Her apology given in the form of a letter did not suffice for this teacher who has a child with intellectual disabilities and cognitive delays . It seemed more like an explanation of why she said it that drifted off into an explanation of victimhood. On Monday, that school board voted to “censure” her. Researchers estimate that 85 to 90 percent of a child’s brain is developed by the age of five. But studies suggest that less than 4 percent of public education investments go to programs serving children during this critical period. That disconnect—between the importance of those early years, and the shortage of capital available for supporting programs—was part of what drove Neal Shenoy to launch BEGiN, an early-education media company, in 2012. The Internet Archive warehouses all kinds of fantastic materials (and some not-so-fantastic) that can be useful to teachers and students. The trouble with it is the organization is a little clunky for research purposes. Even if you limit the scope of your search to webpages and text you can still spend a lot of time weeding out material that isn't academic in nature. That could be changing now that Internet Archive Scholar is on the horizon.  Internet Archive Scholar is a new project from the Internet Archive. It is focused on providing access to academic articles and journals from the 18th Century through today. Internet Archive Scholar is very new. It's so new that it's labeled as being "in alpha" and when you visit it there is a message warning you that there may be several bugs and that it has not been "officially announced." Academics from 67 universities nationally have unanimously voted to approve a set of recommendations for recognizing innovation and entrepreneurial achievements among the criteria for higher education faculty promotion and tenure. The proposal is not to add a fourth prong to the traditional three of teaching, research and service. Rather, it is to place innovation and entrepreneurship within the three prongs. In addition, the proposal aims to be noncontroversial by saying that colleges and universities could let faculty members decide whether to be evaluated on that basis. But judging from the reaction of the American Association of University Professors, which was not consulted on the proposal, there is a controversy. The proposal came out of a National Science Foundation grant to Oregon State University to study whether it should add support for innovation and entrepreneurship into its tenure and promotion guidelines. Colleges are judged on traditional measurements of student success, like graduation and retention rates. These metrics can influence their funding levels, which is especially important given the pandemic-induced recession. But these measurements tend to focus on first-time, full-time students who are seeking degrees. These more traditional students are more likely to attend four-year colleges. Community colleges serve an increasingly nontraditional population of students, said Shauna Davis, executive director of programs at Achieving the Dream, a membership organization advocating for community college student success. Many are older adults, working, parenting or financially independent. These students often start and stop their education several times. They also are more likely to attend college part-time, which can have a big impact on funding for their institutions. Community college students also need support for basic needs, like food and housing. Graduation rates provide on
