A group of high school and college students from around the world who met on a social network popular among video gamers are putting their tech skills to work against the spread of COVID-19 misinformation. Their effort began in early April, when a Harvard University student, Lucas Chu, sent out a message to a group of people he had met on the social platform Discord. The idea was to organize students to make data visualizations to help show trends in the spread of COVID-19 and to counter false narratives about the virus. Those students formed what they called the Coronavirus Visualization Team , and they quickly gathered hundreds of participants from high schools and colleges. The World Digital Library is a resource that I started using back in 2009 . At that time it was just a small collection of about 1,200 digitized primary source artifacts from libraries around the world. Today, the World Digital Library hosts more than 19,000 digitized primary source artifacts to view and download. As you'll see in the video embedded below you can search the  WDL  by date, era, country, continent, topic, and type of resource. But my favorite way to explore the WDL is by browsing through the interactive maps that are available when you click on the globe icon in the site's header. New Zealand universities are pinning their pandemic recovery hopes on an early 2021 return of international students, after the government ruled out a relaxation of border restrictions this year. Now, many universities are reversing their plans, announcing both online courses and closed campuses. In some cases, dominoes have been quick to fall among peer groups. For example, three private, historically Black universities in Atlanta, which has been hard hit by the virus in recent weeks, have said almost all students will be studying from home this fall. Some institutions in one-time virus hot spots are also facing challenges getting their instructors to teach in person. Perhaps nowhere is faculty anxiety greater than in Florida, which set -- and broke -- new state records for single-day coronavirus deaths this week. Intensive care units at hospitals there are reportedly close to capacity. California set its own dismal record this week, too, but colleges and universities there have been much quicker to cancel in-person instruction. Criminals may have accessed private information from donors to at least 16 U.S. universities as part of a cyberattack on cloud computing company Blackbaud. Hackers were unsuccessful in blocking access to Blackbaud files but did make a copy of a subset of data. The discussion forum plays a central role in our online graduate-level, advanced research methods course, providing opportunities for students to demonstrate knowledge and connect and learn with each other and the instructor. It is often the closest approximation of the kinds of conversations that occur in the face-to-face environment. However, the asynchronous format, along with vast differences in student age, profession, family commitments, and degree program, can negatively affect the quality of these discussions. Seeking to improve the quality of students’ contributions to the discussion forum, we decided to use Glowacki-Dudka and Barnett’s (2007) conference style roles.
